A bottle of Ylang in Gold by M. Micallef with shreds of golden paper

The Exotic Allure of Ylang in Gold by M. Micallef

Ylang in Gold by M. Micallef is a masterpiece that intertwines sophistication, warmth, and tropical allure. Launched in 2012, this Oriental Floral fragrance has captivated the senses of many, including mine, with its unique blend of notes. The fragrance is described on Fragrantica as a luxurious journey through a blend of rich florals, warm sweetness, and exotic musk. This description intrigued me after I first smelled it on my sister. I was so taken by its charm that I immediately checked Fragrantica to learn more. Seeing the notes—Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, and Sandalwood—confirmed that this scent would be perfect for me, and I knew I had to try it myself.

The Composition

  • Top Notes: Rose, Caramel, Bergamot
  • Middle Notes: Ylang Ylang, Orange Blossom, Jasmine
  • Base Notes: Vanilla, Sandalwood, Musk

At first spray, Ylang in Gold opens with a very traditional, "perfume-y" aroma—a blend of rose, caramel, and bergamot. I’ll admit, I was a little worried that the bergamot would dominate the fragrance. Citruses often overwhelm on my skin, quickly transforming perfumes into mosquito repellents. Thankfully, this was not the case here. The bergamot provides a bright and slightly zesty opening without overshadowing the other notes. It’s slightly floral and sweet, giving off a refined and aromatic introduction. However, after a few minutes, the magic happens. The scent evolves into what I can only describe as a banana like aroma, I guess it's because of the interplay of Ylang Ylang and vanilla.

On my skin, the top notes lean more on the sweet flowery side, but the drydown reveals a gorgeous mix of vanilla, coconut, and musk. It’s sweet, but not juvenile, making it perfect for those who want an understated elegance.

My Journey with Ylang in Gold

This fragrance has a special story in my life. It all started when my sister received a sample of Ylang in Gold. She wore it to a family gathering, and I was immediately intrigued. It smelled exquisite on her—warm, tropical, and sophisticated. Her love for this fragrance convinced me to try it myself.

I quickly realized why she adored it. The scent is versatile; it works beautifully during warm weather, where its tropical qualities shine, but also adds a cozy, sweet touch in colder months (yes I tried it during summer and winter). Despite its moderate longevity on me (lasting about 5–6 hours on my skin unless oversprayed), it’s a scent I’ve grown to cherish.

A Fragrance with Personality

One of the standout aspects of Ylang in Gold is its uniqueness. I would not say it’s a safe blind buy; it’s a fragrance you need to experience on your skin before committing. Unlike Xerjoff’s Dama Bianca, which feels like a perfectly blended, sophisticated scent, Ylang in Gold dances to its own rhythm. It’s a slightly spicy, exotic, and sexy vanilla scent that transforms beautifully throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

While I’m not a fan of the shimmer in the formula (only present in the full presentation, for some reason the sample I had was had a red colour), the scent itself is worth it. Ylang in Gold is understated, elegant, and utterly captivating. It’s not just a fragrance—it’s a story, a journey, and an experience. Whether for daily wear or special occasions, it’s a scent that has earned a permanent place in my collection.

If you’re seeking a fragrance that’s sweet, tropical, and sophisticated, I highly recommend sampling Ylang in Gold. Like my sister and I, you might just fall in love with its charm.
